English

This half term's English is based upon The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. 

Sophie and her Mummy are having tea in the kitchen when in walks a hungry tiger who asks to stay to tea. After eating everything, he moves on to Daddy's supper and for good measure also cleans out the fridge and drinks all the water from the tap. 

We will be writing character descriptions, instructions and our own versions of the story. 

We are continuing with Level 5 phonics.

Maths

Maths this half term is focusing upon the following:

• Days of the weeks, months of the year
• Telling time - o'clock and half past
• Position and direction 

Science

Our Science is based on everyday materials and their properties. 

We will be: 

• Sorting, describing the properties and classifying objects from the materials that are made from.
• Identifying what materials have certain properties.
• Testing materials to find out which is the best material for a given purpose

Geography

We will be learning about the geography of China through focusing on the main human and physical features of the country, extending children’s knowledge of the world. We will  learn about the  similarities and differences between China and the United Kingdom. 

Art

This half term's Art is based around 'Paper Art' in which we will be investigating the effects of different kinds and textures of paper when creating a piece of art. 

We will be creating paper sculptures, weaving, collage, using tissue paper to create stained glass windows and looking at different artists and crafts people linked to these areas. 

Music

This half term's music is based around the theme of 'In The Groove'.  We will be listening to, appraising and learning songs from different eras.  We will be playing instruments to accompany the songs. 

PSHE

Living in the Wider World : Diverse Britain

This unit is inspired by the idea that individuals can have a positive impact on groups and communities to which they belong. It aims to enable the children to identify that they belong to various groups and communities and ways in which they contribute positively to these. In this unit, children learn about community, being good neighbours and looking after the environment. They will also learn about Britain, what it means to be British, about diversity and the importance of celebrating and being respectful of our differences.

Computing

Purple Mash Unit: Lego Builders

This unit encourages children to begin to think logically about scenarios. Children will be introduced to the term ‘algorithm’. This concept is at the core of coding. 

PE

PE on a Monday is with Mrs Fiddian and on a Thursday with Mrs Barker. We will be focusing upon a pirate themed dance unit in which we explore speed and actions and  in yoga developing different poses and working on flexibility. We will also be developing their sending and receiving ball skills. 

RE

This term, the class will be looking at and enjoying 'Special stories for Christians and Muslims'. They will be able to name the holy books that belong to Muslims and Christians and how they are looked after. They will listen to some stories from both religions and the meaning behind them for their followers.

Year 1's Easter unit is 'Why does Easter matter to Christians?'. The will listen, reflect, re-tell and ask questions about the Easter story, identify the names of the days of Holy Week and understand what happened to Jesus on Good Friday.
