This half term our writing units will continue to be based on the book, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This story is about a gigantic iron robot who appears out of no-where, crashing onto the beach and shattering into many parts. He is discovered by a young boy, Hogarth. The Iron Man proceeds to cause trouble to the villagers, devouring their machinery, until they decide to rise against him and entrap him.
We will be studying the features of and writing our own versions of a set of instructions, a formal letter of apology and a newspaper report. We will also watch the film version and compare similarities and differences between this.
This term we will be covering topics including written methods of multiplication and division, rounding, fractions, decimals and time. We will be focusing on learning the 8 and 9 times tables and their related division facts, in addition to recapping prior multiplication and division facts.

As a school we use TTRockstars to practise our times tables. We encourage the children to practise regularly at home. Year 4 have a termly challenge to earn raffle tickets and wow cards for playing regularly at home!
All Around the World
We will be focusing on learning about the wider word in our geography lessons this half term, including:
- Continents, countries and oceans of the world
- Using an atlas to locate countries and research facts
- Identifying polar regions and comparing them to the UK
- Identify and understand lines of latitude and longitude
- Tropical climates
- The Prime Meridian
- Different times zones around the world
Don't forget our home learning project to chose a continent to research in detail and present your findings. Projects are due Friday 8th December.
Our physics unit on sound will teach us all about how sounds are created and heard. We will be looking at:
- How sounds are made by different instruments
- How we hear sounds via the ear
- How to change to volume of sounds
- How to change the pitch of sounds
We will be learning the vocabulary for our new topic 'Food' this half term. We will be looking at using the vocabulary for different foods in French and building up our conversation skills to ask what people like to eat.
Our unit this half term focuses on developing our musical notation skills. We will be looking at recognising different letter notes and the names and duration for each note. We will be playing glockenspiels to a variety of pieces and begin to compose our own pieces.
We will be learning about different responsibilities that we have and how to keep ourselves safe. This includes school rules, emergency situations, road, water and railway hazards, and how to deal with common and simple injuries.
In this textiles unit we will be exploring different stocking products. We will use these to design, make and evaluate our own Christmas Stockings!
We will be looking at spreadsheets this term using Purple Mash. We will be inputting formula into cells and using this to look at data.
