Autumn 1
English
This half term our text is 'Flat Stanley'. The book is a story of a young boy squished by a bulletin board in his sleep leaving him as flat as a pancake. Stanley uses his new found flatness to his advantage and goes on a trip to America, where he flies like a kite among other interesting adventures.
We will be writing a character description, a setting description and a postcard all based on the story. We will also revise Year 2 grammar, spelling and punctuation. The children will continue their learning about different sentence structures including the use of conjunctions and adjectives.
Maths
This half term we will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction and begin to look at measuring time. We will also be recapping prior skills learnt in year 2.
We will be working to cover these objectives.
- recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (100s, 10s, 1s)
- compare and order numbers up to 1,000
- identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
- read and write numbers up to 1,000 in numerals and in words
- solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas
- add and subtract numbers mentally, including:
- a three-digit number and 1s
- a three-digit number and 10s
- a three-digit number and 100
- tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks
- estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours; use vocabulary such as o’clock, am/pm, morning, afternoon, noon and midnight.
Science
The focus for this half term is 'Light'
The children will learn to recognise that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. They will notice that light is reflected from surfaces. They will learn that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes. They will also learn that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object. They will also find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.
Geography
This Extreme Earth unit will teach the children about the destructive powers of nature, focusing on volcanoes and earthquakes. Through discussion and practical tasks, children will learn about how and why these natural phenomena occur, the structure of the earth, the ways in which they affect people and the environment and whether there are any benefits to living in locations that suffer from these natural events.
French
Our topic is 'Getting to know you'
This unit will teach the children about basics of the French language. They will learn to greet each other, exchange names, ask how someone is, count to 10 and say how old they are. We will read the words we need and write them.
PSHE
This half term our topic is TEAM - Together everyone achieves more.
This unit is inspired by the idea that if a class team works well together, it has a positive impact on all of its members and what they can achieve. It aims to enable the children to identify the impact their actions have on the team they are working in. In this unit, children learn about successful teamwork skills, being considerate of others in the team and how to positively resolve any conflicts that occur. They will also learn about their individual responsibilities towards teams they work in and how new starts, such as starting a new school year, may feel and how they can support each other in this.
Music
The children continue to use Charanga for their music learning. Our theme is 'Let Yourself Fly' The children will listen and appraise songs and will have the opportunity to learn to sing the songs, play Instruments improvise, compose and perform.
DT
Our topic for this half term is 'Photograph Frames'
The children will have the chance to explore the materials and components of different photograph frames, engage in practical activities to develop their experience of working with tools and techniques, as well as having the chance to design, make and evaluate their own photograph frames.
RE
Our topic for this half term is 'Living in Harmony: How do we care?'
They will learn to
*Describe what it means to care and to who.
*Describe what a neighbour is and know ways to be a good neighbour.
*Talk about caring to people from other religions
*Describe what 'Langar' is and why it is important to Sikhs.
PE
PE will be taught by Mrs. Barker and Mr Evans on Monday & Thursday. Children will need to arrive at school in their PE Kit on these days. The children will be developing their athletic skills.
They will learn
*the correct technique for running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
*play competitive games and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending *develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
Computing
In computing, the children will be learning about 'Online Safety' and 'Touch Typing'
Children will learn the importance of passwords and how it is important to keep them safe. They will learn about the uses of the internet and consider the reliability of information on it. They will also learn about age restrictions on social media apps and games. Finally, the children will learn where and who to turn to for help if they come across inappropriate content or contact. During our 'Touch Typing' lessons the children will learn about the correct way to sit at a keyboard, home, top and bottom row keys and which keys are pressed by right/left hand.
