Healthy Lunchboxes
Mon 23 Oct 2023At Havergal, we want to promote healthy lunchtimes. Our kitchen has to keep to a Government set of standards which monitor how balanced the menu is so there are all food groups covered. However, we are noticing that more children are bringing foods that are not healthy choices in their lunchboxes.
Therefore, we wanted to raise awareness of what is recommended in a ‘healthy lunchbox’.
The websites below offer suggestions and guidance for what to include in a lunchbox.
https://www.nhs.uk/healthier-families/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes/
https://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk/whole-school/whole-school-approach/healthy-lunchboxes
A healthy balanced lunchbox could include:
· A good portion of starchy food, for example wholemeal roll or bread, wraps, pitta pocket, pasta or rice salad.
· Plenty of fruit and vegetables, for example an apple, satsuma, handful of cherry tomatoes or carrot sticks, mini can of fruit chunks in natural juice or cucumber/pepper sticks.
· A drink of milk or a portion of dairy food, for example a portion of cheese or a pot of yoghurt.
· A portion of lean meat, fish, eggs or beans. For example ham, chicken, turkey, tuna, egg or hummus.
· A drink of unsweetened fruit juice, milk or water.
· Crisps, cakes and biscuits are included too but in moderation please, no large quantities.
As a school, we will also be discussing healthy lunchboxes/snacks in class, linking it to food groups and how you should be eating a variety of foods and what those foods do to your body.

School open as normal on Tuesday 5th September
Fri 01 Sep 2023As a result of the recent news of the DfE announcement that schools and academies have/will be contacted days before the start of term regarding the risk of RAAC constructions within their buildings, I would like to provide you with the following information.
As we are part of St Chad's Academies Trust, the matter of RAAC has been an ongoing agenda item for St Chad's Academies Trust’s Estates working group, with the DfE questionnaires completed by our academy in 2022, with further consideration and support given from a specialist educational building company.
It is for this reason, I am reaching out to provide assurance from the initial reports that there has been no risk identified at our academy and there is no requirement for our academy to be closed.
We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday morning for the start of our new academic year.

Increase In School Meal Price
Mon 17 Jul 202317th July 2023,
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we are all aware, everything at the moment has increased in price significantly. We as a school, have been trying extremely hard not to pass on those increases to you all as parents and carers.
Unfortunately, the time has arrived that we need to increase the price of our school meals. We have not had a price increase for at least four years, even despite other schools increasing their prices.
We are planning to increase the price of a school meal from £2.30 to £2.50, we know that you will support us in thinking that the price rise is a reasonable amount and still offers good value for the variety of nutritious and balanced food that we have available for the children.
Our school menus are available on our school website Havergal Lunch and Break Menus
The new price will start from September 2023.
If you are in receipt of any benefits listed below you may be entitled to free school meals. Free school meals are provided to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 as part of a Government incentive even if you are in receipt of benefits. In addition, the school receives additional pupil premium funding for children where their parents are in receipt of the benefits below.
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
