Autumn 1
English
This half term our writing units will be based on the book, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This story is about a gigantic iron robot who appears out of no-where, crashing onto the beach and shattering into many parts. He is discovered by a young boy, Hogarth. The Iron Man proceeds to cause trouble to the villagers, devouring their machinery, until they decide to rise against him and entrap him.
We will be performing versions of the poem and writing our own. We will be studying the features of and writing our own versions of a wanted poster and a set of instructions.
Maths
This term we will be covering topics including place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and area. We will be focusing on learning the 6 and 7 times tables and their related division facts, in addition to recapping prior multiplication and division facts.
We will be working to cover the objectives:
- find 1,000 more or less than a given number
- recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (1,000s, 100s, 10s, and 1s)
- order and compare numbers beyond 1,000
- identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
- add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate

Changing States
Our chemistry unit of changing states will teach us all about the three states of matter, solids, liquids and gases. We will be looking at:
Solids, liquids and gases and their properties
Temperature and how we measure it
The process of changing states between solids, liquids and gases by heating, cooling, evaporation and condensation
The Water Cycle and how it uses these processes
Investigating the effects of these changes
